You probably still have the data files, but you're not able to open them from the table of contents buttons because of either or both of these issues:
1) The .zip folder is still compressed (Mac users can skip this step)
2) You have it open in a web browser (Preview app for Macs)
1) First right click on the folder and select Extract or Extract all. I'm on Windows 11, the menus look different but have the same basic options in Windows 10. Find the .zip folder with the companion guide in it and extract/unzip it. It'll look similar to this:
After Extracting make sure you're in the new decompressed folder that does not have the zipper by double-clicking the manila folder icon. (The top one in my screenshot.)
If your Start_Here...pdf document looks like mine with the Adobe icon you're all set, you can just double click it. If it looks like anything else (probably your favorite web browser) then you're opening the file in the wrong application. Make sure to install the latest version of Adobe:
All you need is the free version. Then open the file with Adobe Reader. Like this:
